The Society of American Theater Designers
will be the host of an exclusive exhibition
of an extraordinary artist of the 20th Century –

Erté

As his imagination was limitless, Erté designed costumes, stage sets, jewelry, art objects, prints, sculptures and ceramics. This special exhibition focuses on his famous theatrical designs.
This exhibition, co–organized with the Metropolitan Museum of Art, N.Y., and Museum of Modern Arts, N.Y., brings the amazing collection to the Art Institute of Chicago, and  provides the experience of Erté’s world of incredible imagination through over 300 gouaches and prints.

The designs created by Erté during his long and illustrious life influenced not only the world of theatre, film and fashion, but an entire art movement that was to become known as “Art Deco” as well. The genius of the artist is evidenced by an enormous body of art, prints and posters that are considered among the most influential and unique of the 20th century. The height of Erté’s popularity was reached in the 1920s, and to this day, he is perhaps the most recognizable artist from this era. Erté created a style all his own, and there has yet to be another artist quite like him. This style echoed the glamour of the “Roaring Twenties” in a way that no other artist could equal.

The exhibition will take place at the Art Institute of Chicago
starting September 7, 2012 until December 2, 2012.
