The Challenge

A local supplement store had opportunities to strengthen its marketing and make promotions more visible to customers both inside and outside the store. Promotional offers, products, and special deals needed to compete for attention in a busy retail environment, while the store’s website and marketing materials needed to communicate the same message consistently. The challenge was to create marketing that was not only visually appealing, but also practical, timely, and connected to the customer’s experience in the store.

My Role

I supported the store’s marketing activities by combining visual design, digital content, promotional communication, and in-store presentation. I created advertising graphics, updated website content, developed promotional product displays, and helped communicate special offers and marketing partnerships. I also worked directly with the owner to identify promotional opportunities and translate them into customer-facing materials. My role connected the creative side of marketing with the day-to-day needs of a small retail business.

Discovery

Working directly in the store gave me the opportunity to observe how customers interacted with products, promotions, displays, and staff. I learned that retail marketing has to work quickly: customers often make decisions while walking through the store, so messaging needs to be clear, visible, and easy to understand. I also saw that marketing does not happen through one channel. Website content, advertising, promotional displays, media opportunities, and the physical store environment all contribute to how customers perceive the business.

Strategy

I approached the marketing as a connected customer experience rather than a collection of individual advertisements. Promotional messages needed to have a clear purpose, attract attention, and guide customers toward products or offers. I focused on creating visual communication that could work across digital and physical environments while maintaining consistency with the store’s identity. When promotional opportunities became available through owner partnerships, advertising, or special offers, I helped turn those opportunities into practical marketing materials that could be implemented quickly.

Development

The development process involved creating and adapting visual content for several customer touchpoints. I designed promotional graphics, developed product-focused advertising, updated website content, and created visual displays for the retail environment. I considered hierarchy, typography, imagery, product visibility, and placement so that the most important information could be understood quickly. Because the materials were used in an active retail environment, I also had to balance creative presentation with practical requirements such as available space, product visibility, printing, and ease of implementation.

Production

I took the promotional concepts through implementation, adapting designs for the appropriate formats and coordinating their use across the store and digital channels. This included preparing graphics for advertising, updating online content, producing promotional displays, and supporting marketing activities connected to external media and promotional partnerships. Working in a small business environment required flexibility and quick turnaround, often balancing multiple marketing needs while keeping the customer experience and business priorities in focus.

Results

The project created a more active and consistent marketing presence for the store across its physical and digital touchpoints. Customers encountered promotions through in-store displays, product-focused graphics, website content, and external marketing opportunities rather than through a single channel. The work also gave the business a more flexible collection of promotional materials that could be adapted as products, offers, and partnerships changed. Most importantly, I learned how closely marketing strategy and customer experience are connected in retail: a good promotion needs to attract attention, communicate value quickly, and make it easy for the customer to take the next step.
